Stare: being mindful

Stare.001

Today’s adventure involved riding a bike six kilometres to the southern tip of West Island in the Cocos Keeling Islands and snorkelling for two hours before riding back to our accommodation.

As we snorkelled we studied the coral and fish. Some of the minute fish and patterns in the coral caused us to stop and stare. Floating in the bubbles, head under the water, all noise except for the sound of your own breathing is shut out. The world above the water disappears and you are in a very different place.

Your heart beat slows and your soul quietens. Life is reduced to focusing on the colours and shapes around you.

Being mindful means being able to be present in the moment. We can practise this by focusing on something intently and shutting out all the noise.

Sometimes as a writer I may stare out the window and watch at the magpies that congregate outside my window and warble. This is a valid break in my working day. As I clear my mind of things for a while, something creative moves in me and I become inspired and the scribbling begins again.
