Daring Adventure: 35 days of dares

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all. Helen Keller

Helen Keller, author, political activist, and lecturer, was blind and deaf, yet lived an incredible life. Her words of inspiration still speak to us today and invite us to view life as something to be grasped with both hands.

Daring to live life as an adventure means taking risks and stepping out. Over the next month, I’m going to remind myself of the dares that have motivated me to live life differently. Fear is crippling, so is self-doubt as well as apathy.

I dare you to live life as a daring adventure as we complete a dare a day over the next 35 days.

Dare #1 Dare to Begin

We are still in January, the month of beginnings. January is a time we reflect on goals, our past year’s failures, regrets, highlights and achievements. January of a new year is fresh page on which to write a new story.

What are you beginning this year? A new writing project? A health or fitness goal? Building family relationships? A new business?

Why not write down some personal dares for yourself? What have you been considering doing that you haven’t begun yet?

I’ve committed to doing the Oxfam Walk in October this year—100kms in 48 hours! What was I thinking? How can I walk that far in such a short time?

I’m just about to go to the gym and run on the treadmill. It’s too hot outside so I will still walk a few kilometres. I will log my distances and build up over the next few months until I can walk 50kms in a day.

It all starts with one step.

I’ve got a new notebook and the beginnings of a new novel are being scratched out in it. One  page at a time. 1000 words a day at least. In 50 days I should have the bulk of my next YA novel draft complete. It all starts with just one page.

The secret is to write just anything,

to dare to write just anything,

because when you write just anything,

you begin to say what is important.

Julien Green

I’m beginning the year with some outrageous goals. What will you dare to begin?

He who would begun has half done.

Dare to be wise; begin.
