Dare to Be Ageless

#35 Days of Dares #13 Dare to Be Ageless

‘I worry about my age.’  Worry is self-attack. In truth, no one will hold your age against you if you don’t. Remember, you are never too old, to love, to smile, to give a compliment, to think positively. Be ageless. Eckhart Tolle

There’s no denying that as we age things change in our body, thinking and spirit. The benefit of adding another number to your age each year is that you have confirmation that you are still alive. You celebrate another year of life. We have no guarantees of the number of days in our lives, so to bemoan getting older and complaining about the aches and pains and increased maintenance that seems to come with it in a bitter way, means that we can’t fully embrace life as it is.

No one wants to feel their bodies decay or to recognise that their brain is fading, but there’s something inspiring and exciting about a person older than you who is still excited about life, still interested in people and who feels they are contributing even if the physical is fading.

Just because you get older doesn’t mean things stop. It’s when you stop. It’s when your wonder stops. It’s when your innovation stops. It’s when your creativity stops. And you allow yourself to go asunder. The beauty of getting older is the surprise of what else you can do to make the world a better place with the wisdom that you’ve accrued over those years. Goldie Hawn

My Nana was 98 when she died and she was limited in her ability to get out much at the end, but every day she’d put on a pair of heels, slap on some bright lipstick and a nice outfit if she left he room to have dinner with the other residents at her nursing home. She told me, ‘I don’t have much, but I’m happy.’

She had lived a life of giving away what she had to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She cheered everyone on and encouraged us to fulfil  our dreams without judgement.

Nana’s spirit was ageless, even though her ageing body betrayed her.

The gym I go to has people from all decades of life. We work out alongside each other cheerfully and encourage each other. Age doesn’t matter at our gym. We’re all just enjoying the experience of using our bodies and people actually smile at each other!

Being ageless is less about the physical and more about the spiritual. If we can have a spirit of love, enthusiasm, faith, wisdom, wonder, creativity and joy, we can be truly be ageless.

A heart that loves is always young. Greek Proverb

I will keep as physically strong as I can for as long as I can so that I can keep living life to the full. I hope that my spirit is always fired by adventure, even when I’m old. When I’m no longer able to travel, I’ll sit and dream as my imagination takes flights of adventure. I’ll smile and listen to the young ones who share their stories. I’ll tell them to live their lives fully, making every moment count. I’ll be with them in spirit.

I dare you to be ageless!

I would rather be ashes than dust; I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot; I would rather be in a superb meteor, every atom of me in a magnificent glow than in a sleepy and permanent planet; the proper function of man is to live, not to exist; I should not waste my days in trying to prolong them; I shall USE my time. Jack London
