Packing Light For Adventure

We’re heading off on another adventure tomorrow and it’s Day 11 of my #365adventure for 2015. It’s back to work after a month off at home. What does that look like? How does two weeks of diving on remote islands in the Indian Ocean sound?

Part of living this life is deciding what to take on the journey and what to leave behind. Now that’s a Life App we can all take with us wherever we go.  How do we decide what’s important and what’s not?

For a remote, island work trip,  (read basic—no fancy resorts, no supermarkets or shopping malls, no poolside cocktails or butlers to iron your clothing) you need to pack light. Our clothes only make up about 5kg of our 69kg allowance. The rest is made up of diving gear, photography gear (www.stevefraser.co carries underwater cameras, wide format cameras, DSLR plus myriad other gadgets), books, notebooks, laptops and so on so we can work.)

Packing light is difficult for us as we take so much gear, however, in choosing what to take or not take, we find out what’s really important.

In life, it’s important to decide what to carry through life and what to throw off. People often ask us how we could walk away from our careers and ‘give up’ our security. We planned for a long time, several years, that we would move away from what we were doing into working full-time on our creative pursuits. ‘Giving up’ stuff was easy because we decided that casting off the 9 to 5 and being willing to make some sacrifices was worth it if we could choose to do what we wanted to.

Now I spend my life writing and Steve (husband) spends his life photographing. Along we way, we write books, volunteer our time and skills for non-profits, travel, develop our skills and live a pretty amazing life.

We could still have some of that if we’d stayed in our old lives, however, it was in the casting off that we learnt what was really important.

My next post will be from the middle of the Indian Ocean halfway between Perth and Sri Lanka. See you on the other side!
