Dare to Travel With Others

#35 Days of Dares #23 Dare to Travel With Others

#23travelwithothers.001

We all need people we can count on, learn from and walk beside. When we’ve been hurt or disappointed with others, it’s difficult at times to trust again.

I’m fortunate enough to have friends I’ve known more than half my life. They are the ones I don’t need to explain things too—they just get it.

In my professional life, I have people I can trust sharing my work with and receive honest criticism. I have teachers who guide me through this development stage of my writing.

I have a partner and family who support me, understand me and even tell me when I’m on a wrong path.

We all need trusted people to travel life with.

The teachers I’ve learned the most from, didn’t think they were teaching me; they just thought we were friends. Bob Goff

Most of all, we need people who will allow us to be ourselves, warts and all.

A friend is someone with whom you dare to be yourself. Frank Crane

I’ve found opening up and sharing my work has been my biggest challenge in recent years. I have close friends in my personal life and if I’m rejected by others, it may hurt, but I don’t care as much as if my nearest and dearest rejected me. Sharing my writing with agents, publishers, editors and critique partners has been challenging. They see your work and challenge your ideas, critique your writing and even reject it.

Learning to deal with that has been difficult. Doing it over and over doesn’t get much easier, but it’s the only way to improve. We all need people who will help knock off our rough edges and help us to grow—whether it’s professionally or personally.

I’ve just been accepted into a mentoring programme for my writing and it’s another step into vulnerability for me. Hopefully, it will help me improve my writing and perhaps reach some huge goals I have set for myself. I’m daring myself to travel with a mentor. Who will you travel with?

Dare to travel with others.
