Paris Is Always A Good Idea. Audrey Hepburn

This week we’ve been planning around some commitments in Europe in June. We figure, if you’ve got to go that far, why not make the most of it and extend the journey?

My husband has his birthday in June and I asked him where he’d like to be for the day. ‘Paris,’ he said, without any hesitation.

So in June, after I’ve been to Tuscany for a writing retreat and he’s been chasing waterfalls and glaciers in Iceland, we’ll be rendezvousing in Paris.

The first time we were in Paris, as we sipped wine on the Champs-Elysées my husband decided that he wouldn’t be doing the work he was involved in anymore, and less than five years later, he’d sold out of his business and had taken up landscape photography full time.

Paris is more than romance to us— it’s a place where a decision was made—a place that inspired us to a life filled with adventure.

That’s why Paris is always a good idea to us.

One of our favourite things to do in Paris is to sit in a cafe, sip on a coffee and watch people go by. People watching is obligatory in this city and not at all rude. I can see why writers love this city so much. History, art, fashion and elegance  are in Paris’ DNA and to spend time there is a gift to the senses. It plays on your emotions, romances you.

We have been very fortunate to have been to Paris three times and our fourth will be even better as we know this city a little more intimately. We will wander the streets searching out new experiences and perhaps stop for a small glass of wine. We will toast my husband’s birthday and a raise our glasses in a salute to one of our favourite cities.

New York, Paris, London and Rome are a quartet of cities I love for many different reasons. Each of them has something to love, but Paris? Paris has, as they say, a certain je ne sais quoi.
