It’s Not Too Late

Are you a late creative bloomer? Did you  wait until later in life to take the brave step  and begin to live a creative life?

I quit teaching to take up writing full-time. I wish I’d done it earlier in life. I wish I’d realised that writing was a ‘real job’. I wish I’d been braver sooner.

But …

I didn’t. As it turns out, nothing has been wasted. The years I spent teaching were some of the most rewarding of my life. I don’t regret teaching at all.

It’s just that now I have more sense of urgency. Of time passing. So it’s now or never.

I’ve published four books and have three under way and I’m doing all I can to make sure that I use time well.

When we do creative things we love, it may feel like so much fun that we get the idea that we’re being selfish or egotistical or silly to be following our heart.

Maybe you’re still at school or university and in your twenties or thirties and you are contemplating how to incorporate creativity into your life or how you can make a career out of what you do. It doesn’t matter. My advice, with the hindsight of years, would be to just work on making your art. It doesn’t matter if it is your hobby or career or dream right now. If you start working on it now, follow your curiosity as Elizabeth Gilbert encourages us to do, at least you will be heading in the direction you want to go.

Here’s some inspiration for those of you who think it’s too late to begin.
