100 Day Creative Challenge: Day 42

100 Day Creative Challenge Day 42: Devoted

Devoted

  • a feeling of strong love or loyalty : the quality of being devoted

  • the use of time, money, energy, etc, for a particular purpose

If devotion is is defined as a strong love or loyalty what are you devoted to?

My strong love and loyalty is to writing. I want to inspire, to express emotion and to fulfil the story promise of my life. The story promise that was birthed in a ten year old girl who dreamed of being a writer.

Julia Cameron writes: Enthusiasm is not an emotional state. It is a spiritual commitment, a loving surrender to our creative process. Enthusiasm – from the Greek, ‘filled with God’ – is an ongoing energy supply tapped into the flow of life itself.

I agree with Cameron’s view that our creative process and creative flow is linked to our spirituality. I’ve always had a sense that while my mind is filled with ideas and it’s my hand that uses the pen or presses the keys, that there’s something else working in me as inspiration and guidance. That still, small voice that some may call God and others may call divine guidance  or serendipity gives us the creative energy we require to do what we do.

If I receive this ‘enthusiasm’ or ‘inspiration’ I feel compelled to use it. When the words are flowing like the proverbial river, is that just me? Or is it me filled with God?

I can’t explain the feeling except to say that my devotion to writing springs out of a thankfulness that I have words to use. Thankfulness that ideas grow. Thankfulness that when I give myself over in loving surrender to the creative process, I am living out my story promise.

I am devoted.
